Probiotic products have become an increasingly popular option in today's nutritional supplement market. In general, probiotics consist of microorganisms such as bacteria and yeasts that are commonly found amongst the natural flora of our intestinal and digestive tracts. They can currently be found in a variety of commercial products such as yogurt, juices and other dietary goods, and they also provide a host of potential benefits for today's health-conscious consumer.

Colon Cancer Prevention

Probiotics might provide some protection against colon cancer due to their ability to lower the activity of an enzyme that can generate carcinogens within the digestive system. Additionally, certain probiotic strains may also be able to inhibit this disease by binding with cancer-causing agents that are formed within cooked meats. This benefit has not yet been proven; medical studies are ongoing.

Lowering of LDL Cholesterol

The June 2006 issue of "Annals of Nutrition and Metabolism" features a University of Vienna study that indicated certain types of probiotic bacteria can reduce the amount of lipids that contribute to LDL, or "bad" cholesterol, in the body. Results have shown that these microorganisms may break down bile within the body's gut, which then prevents the blood's re-absorption of bile in the form of cholesterol.

Boosting the Immune System

Certain bacteria in the intestinal wall aid in the inhibition of pathogenic growth within one's gut; probiotics help increase the levels of these helpful bacteria and, as such, they can serve as a means of regulating or restoring the body's immune system. They also help stimulate the production of anti-body production. Since the intestinal tract acts as one of the body's first lines of defense, taking probiotics can be especially helpful in times of stress or when other environmental factors have interrupted the natural balance of flora within the digestive system.

Reducing Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) Symptoms

In the July 2006 edition of "The American Journal of Gastroenterology," a study led by Dr. P.J. Whorwell indicated the probiotic Bifidobacterium infantis is effective in alleviating some of the symptoms that are associated with irritable bowel syndrome, including severe bloating, gas and abdominal discomfort. Similar gut-related afflictions such as colitis may also be relieved to a certain degree by incorporating probiotics into the diet.

Urogenital Benefits

Probiotic use can relieve the discomfort associated with urinary tract infections and helps to promote overall urogenital health, especially in women. Lactobacilli organisms are particularly beneficial in restoring the proper balance of microflora, which is helpful in combating yeast infections and other urinary issues.

Alleviating Lactose Intolerance

Ingestion of certain lactic acid strains can provide increased amounts of lactase to the stomach and intestines. This can allow lactose intolerant individuals to consume increased amounts of milk and dairy products, thus benefiting from the vitamins and nutrients such foods provide.
