It's important for seniors to continue to exercise to keep muscles toned and joints flexible as well as to enhance general health. An article in the journal "American Family Physician," reports that regular exercise is associated with longer and healthier lives for seniors. However, many seniors have challenges that make it difficult for them to walk. DVDs that specialize in chair routines can help them achieve fitness goals--including aerobics--while seated.

Zookinesis

"Chair Exercises for Seniors: Zookinesis" is based on the Chinese Art of Zookinesis, which combines Tai Chi and yoga and is performed in a seated position. Robert Klein teaches on more than 25 exercise DVDs and is a certified Tai Chi instructor.

Gentle Fitness

Catherine MacRae teaches exercises appropriate for seniors as well as those with disabilities who must be seated during a routine. Exercises include stretches as well as coordination, flexibility and balance routines. The DVD contains several routines that can be mixed and matched based on the ability level of the participant.

Stronger Seniors

The "Stronger Seniors" chair exercise DVDs offer three different programs designed by American Council on Exercise Education Provider Anne Burnell. DVDs available offer seated exercise, seated pilates and seated yoga programs.

Chair Aerobics Series

Although not specifically targeted for seniors, this series includes several DVDs with exercise routines performed seated. Programs include boxing, belly dance, aerobic exercise, tai chi, yoga and circuit training as well as programs for the wheelchair bound and bedridden.

Armchair Fitness

This series of DVDs includes programs for strength and flexibility, yoga, and aerobics led by fitness experts Betty Switkes and Pat Hulbert. Each of the DVDs includes multiple routines, except a gentle fitness program which has only one 30-minute routine that includes head-to-toe stretching and some strengh exercises.
