Few things are more frustrating for a basketball player than finding out, midway through a game, that one's shoes have lost their traction because of accumulated dust or dirt on the soles. In such moments, it's important to clean the grime to return maximum traction to the basketball shoes. Of course, some people just want clean-looking shoes during a game. Cleaning your basketball shoes during a game isn't hard and can typically be accomplished in seconds.
What to Do
Step 1
Use a spray bottle to apply a small amount of water to your basketball shoes. Be sure to lightly wet the top and the bottom of the basketball shoes.
Step 2
Use a soft cloth to wipe away the water from the top of your shoes. If your basketball shoes have suede portions, this soft cloth can be used, too.
Step 3
Scrub the bottom of your shoes with an old toothbrush. This will remove any dirt and dust from the portion of your shoe that is supposed to be providing traction. Scrub all over, but especially the front third of the sole and the heel.
Step 4
Use the soft cloth to thoroughly dry off the bottom of the basketball shoe.
Tips and Warnings
- In the absence of a spray bottle or some other source of water, use your saliva. Rub the saliva vigorously across the sole of your shoe with your palm. Consider keeping a damp towel near the bench during a game and wiping the bottom of your shoes with it just before entering the game to improve traction.
