A good foot massage can make you feel relaxed throughout your body. There are thousands of nerve receptors in your feet that transmit feel-good impulses throughout your body during a foot massage. Mastering the art of giving a foot massage can help you relieve your own stress and tension. Use the same techniques to massage another person's foot as well.

Step 1

Sit in a comfortable place. Hold one foot in your hand and rotate your ankle in a slow circle, clockwise first, then counterclockwise. Gently tug on each toe, one at a time. Repeat with the other foot.

Step 2

Use both hands to hold one of your feet. Gently rub lotion on the top and bottom of your foot and press firmly with both your thumbs up and down the sole of your foot. Push deep with your thumbs, moving them up and down your sole making small circles. Repeat with your other foot.

Step 3

Switch your fingers and thumbs so that your thumbs are on top of your foot and your fingers are holding the soles. Move your hands up and down the length of your foot, pressing firmly. Repeat with your other foot.

Step 4

Hold your heel with one hand. Use your other hand to press your toes forward to stretch them, holding the stretch for about five seconds. Gently push them the other way, and hold for five more seconds. Repeat a two times. Repeat with your other foot.

Step 5

Use your fingertips to find the small indentations in the bones on top of your foot. Use your four fingers to gently push up and down along the center of the indentation. Repeat with your other foot.

Tips and Warnings

  • Use a lightweight, non-greasy lotion. Soak your feet before a foot massage for even more soothing effect. Combine Epsom salts, essential oils or fresh flower petals and warm water in a large container and soak your feet in the mixture for 20 minutes. Wipe your feet completely dry with a towel before starting your massage.
  • Be sure you wear socks or slippers after a foot massage since the lotion can make your feet slippery.
