Originating in Africa, the aloe vera plant is now grown throughout the world as both an ornamental and a commercial crop. The gel from within the leaf of the plant has traditionally been used for treating a variety of ailments. Externally, it is commonly used for minor burns, cuts, scrapes, sunburn and contact dermatitis. It is also taken internally for a range of problems from mouth ulcers to gastritis. Making your own aloe vera gel is a relatively simple process that can be done at home.
Step 1
Carefully remove several large outer leaves from a large aloe vera plant. Cut each leaf from the base of the plant with a sharp knife. Wash each leaf to remove any dirt.
Step 2
Starting at one end of the leaf, carefully cut the green rind and yellow sap away from the center of the leaf, in a filleting action, to expose the gel within. Repeat this step on the other side of the leaf. The remaining center of each leaf is the pulp that contains the gel.
Step 3
Press the pulp through a sieve or fine mesh strainer to separate the gel from the pulp. Discard the pulp periodically to keep the sieve clear from obstruction.
Step 4
Combine thoroughly 1/4 teaspoon of vitamin E with each cup of aloe vera gel as a preservative. Place the aloe vera gel in a resealable plastic or glass container and store the gel in the refrigerator for up to one year.
