A cold sore is the result of an infection that typically appears around your mouth, often at an inconvenient time. Contrary to popular belief, cold sores aren't caused by colds. A cold sore is caused by herpes simplex 1(HSV-1), also known as herpes labialis, a less severe strain of herpes. There isn't a single cure for getting rid of cold sores and they will generally clear up on their own in one to two weeks. However there are steps you can take to prevent the spread of the virus and shorten the duration of the cold sore.
Step 1
Keep the area around the cold sore clean by washing with an antiseptic soap. An antiseptic soap contains ingredients that prevent the spread of bacteria and reduces the likelihood of inflammation because it contains minimal fragrance or chemicals.
Step 2
Use an over-the-counter medication to protect the cold sore from environmental irritants. Products such as Abreva can be used up to five times daily until the cold sore heals.
Step 3
Use cold compresses to control pain associated with the cold sore. Saturate a clean towel with cool water and apply to the cold sore until the pain or discomfort subsides. Use another clean, dry towel to pat the area dry.
Step 4
Refrain from engaging in skin-to-skin contact while you have the cold sore. You should avoid kissing or close contact to prevent spreading the virus to someone else. Additionally, keeping your hands clean and avoiding touching your face can also prevent further contamination.
Step 5
Keep the treatment of your cold sore simple. Simple, consistent treatment of the cold sore when enable it to heal quicker and prevent further infection or inflammation.
