Acne often goes away on its own and leaves no marks. However, if you have sensitive skin or if the acne was irritated, it could leave behind unsightly scars. These scars are small bumps or indentations that are often darker than the rest of the skin. Medical treatments for acne scars can be expensive, but it is possible to cover the scars with makeup so that they will not be visible on your skin.

Step 1

Purchase a foundation, concealer and powder that will not clog your pores, irritate your skin or cause future acne. Look for products that are oil-free and hypoallergenic.

Step 2

Wash your face before applying makeup, to avoid trapping dirt or bacteria in your pores. Pat your face dry or allow it to air dry.

Step 3

Apply a concealer to the acne scars you wish to cover and the area immediately surrounding them. Your concealer needs to be one or two shades lighter than your foundation because it will be a little darker when it dries. Use your finger or a facial sponge, and blend the makeup until it matches the shade of the rest of your face.

Step 4

Apply a thin layer of foundation to your face using your fingertips or a makeup sponge. The foundation should be as close as possible to your skin shade. Blend the foundation completely.

Step 5

Apply a light dusting of setting powder to your face with a clean makeup brush. This will hold your makeup in place.

Tips and Warnings

  • You can draw attention away from acne scars by highlighting other features on your face such as your cheekbones, eyes and lips. Talk with your doctor about methods for removing acne scars, such as chemical peels and microdermabrasion.
