Peeling skin can occur due to sunburn or dry skin. When skin peels, your body is shedding dead skin that has dried out. In most cases, dry skin can be prevented at home without the care of a doctor. In some cases, however, severe peeling skin can be the cause of a more serious illness, like Kawasaki disease, suggests the American Academy of Family Physicians. If you notice any other symptoms that accompany your peeling skin, like a fever or skin rash, consult a doctor.

Step 1

Take short baths and showers using lukewarm water. Taking a long, hot bath or shower may feel good on your skin, but it will make peeling worse. To prevent peeling, take a cool or lukewarm bath or shower in 15 minutes or less.

Step 2

Use moisturizing soaps that contain added oils and fats, suggests the Mayo Clinic. Soaps that contain oils are less drying than regular soap. Avoid products that are antibacterial or contain harsh detergents.

Step 3

Slather your dry skin in moisturizer immediately after getting out of the bath or shower. Pat yourself dry with a towel, leaving a small amount of moisture on your skin. Apply a moisturizer, which will help the water cells absorb into your skin.

Step 4

Apply aloe vera gel to your skin every few hours, as needed, to help prevent peeling due to sunburn, recommends the Mayo Clinic. Aloe vera gel is derived from the aloe vera plant, and helps skin retain its moisture. You can purchase aloe vera gel at the grocery store, or remove the gel directly from the inside of the leaves of an aloe vera plant.

Step 5

Sleep with a humidifier. A humidifier is an electric device that distributes water vapor into the air. Throughout the night, the water vapor will absorb into your skin, preventing it from peeling the following day.
