Help rid your body of contaminants acquired through daily exposure to pollution, cleaning products, processed foods and pesticides. By reducing stress, eating whole foods and approaching chores in a natural way, you can create a do-it-your self detox to help you cleanse your mind and body. Enhance your body's ability to cleanse itself through a detox and instill healthier habits for life.
Step 1
Block off a few days to pursue your detox. Choose a time where work and social commitments are minimal or non-existent. Reducing stress, even for a day or two, helps regulate hormone systems responsible for "fight or flight" responses. Turn off your computer, the television and cell phone and pursue yoga or meditation instead.
Step 2
Eliminate the consumption of caffeine, added sugar and alcohol. Clean your cupboards of processed foods and sweets.
Step 3
Commit to a whole-foods diet. Shop for fresh, in-season vegetables and fruits. Eat them raw the majority of the time you are on your detox and flavor with a bit of lemon or lime juice. Eat plain, high fiber whole grains like brown rice and quinoa. You may give up meat for the duration of your detox, or eat small servings of grass-fed lamb, free-range chicken and white fish once or twice a day.
Step 4
Drink plenty of water. Drink 8 oz. every hour and add lemon or cucumbers to flush excess waste and discourage bloating. Include herbal tea if you tire of water.
Step 5
Rest your body. Avoid physical exertion in the form of cardiovascular exercise or strength training. Allow your body to focus on eliminating toxins, rather than on building muscle and burning calories.
Step 6
Switch to all-natural home products to reduce your exposure to chemical pollutants. Purchase household cleaners that use natural plant oils and baking soda as disinfecting and cleansing agents. Choose organic beauty products for the bath, hair and makeup.
Tips and Warnings
- Follow your detox for up to two weeks. If you do detox for more than three days, be sure you are consuming enough calories to support your energy and nutrition needs.
