Whether your hair is long or short, the rules for having healthy hair are the same. The key to having strong, healthy hair all have to do with simple lifestyle habits that, when combined, play a great role in the health of your hair. By taking a few of the proper precautions during the day, you can promote optimal hair growth.
Step 1
Eat a well-balanced diet. According to the Mayo Clinic, a good way to be sure that your hair is getting the adequate nutrition that it needs is to follow a healthy diet. Include a variety of fruits and vegetables as well as healthy proteins in your diet, like fish, eggs, beans, tofu or yogurt. Eliminate foods high in fat, sugar and sodium as much as possible.
Step 2
Take a basic multivitamin daily to provide your hair with the necessary nutrients, like zinc and biotin, for a healthy hair growth. Do not spend your money on a more pricey vitamin manufactured specifically for hair, since it won't be any more beneficial than a standard, over-the-counter multivitamin.
Step 3
Wash and condition your hair with a high-quality product. Check the label for the ingredients ammonium laurel sulfate or silicon, as these are damaging to your hair. If you have questions about a certain product, talk to your hairstylist about what will be most effective for your personal hair type. When using these shampoos and conditioners, wash and rinse your hair with the coolest water possible.
Step 4
Take care not to damage your hair when styling. Comb your hair gently, and do not over comb. Avoid the use of heat styling products like straightening irons, curling irons and hot rollers, and wait until your hair is mostly dried before using a blow dryer. Use ponytail holders and clips that are made not to pull out or break off hair. Style your hair in looser styles to avoid breakage or hair loss as well.
Step 5
Get regular haircuts to remove damage that exists from your hair. Broken or split ends can actually move up the hair strand and weaken otherwise healthy, strong hair.
Step 6
Take time to rest and relax your body. Get between 7 and 9 hours of sleep each night to enhance your hair's ability to grow. Engage in meditation or deep breathing exercises to eliminate stress, which can have a negative effect on your hair's growth.
