The South Beach Diet is a low-carbohydrate diet that focuses on eating healthy fats and carbohydrates. The diet has three phases. Phase 1 lasts 2 weeks and is very restrictive in regard to carbohydrates. In Phase 2, you gradually introduce some of the carbohydrates not allowed in the first phase. You continue with this phase until you reach your desired weight. Phase 3 is a lifetime weight maintenance plan. The diet can be effective, but it has some significant disadvantages.

Restrictive Phases

Phase 1 of the South Beach Diet may be very difficult for carb lovers. This phase does not allow any bread, pasta, cereal, rice or fruit. Sweet foods also are very restricted, with only certain sugar-free items such as candy, gelatin and ice pops allowed. Phase 2 is less strict, but still limits carbohydrate intake. Eating in restaurants or at other people's homes during phase 1 and phase 2 can be problematic.

Ketosis and Ketoacidosis

Initially, ketosis may take place, involving the breakdown of stored fat due to a lack of dietary sugar. This may cause side effects such as nausea, bad breath and headaches. Restricting carbohydrates to less than 20 g a day, as specified for phase 1, can lead to ketoacidosis, according to the Mayo Clinic. Ketoacidosis is typically associated with diabetes, and occurs when unhealthy levels of ketones and acid accumulate in the body, a condition that can be dangerous. A study published in a 2008 issue of the "Journal of Medical Case Reports" discussed a ketoacidosis case associated with the South Beach Diet.

Constipation

Phase 1 of the South Beach Diet allows only a small amount of vegetables and no fruit. This may lead to a lack of some essential vitamins and minerals during this phase, as noted by Diet Health Club. Constipation is another potential disadvantage of the diet during phase 1, since plants are the only foods that provide fiber.

Effectiveness

Low-carbohydrate diets are no more effective over the long term than diets including a more normal amount of these foods, as the Mayo Clinic explains. The South Beach Diet is based on a theory that certain dietary levels of protein and carbohydrates are most important for weight loss, but calorie intake combined with exercise is actually most important, according to the Mayo Clinic.
