Retin-A is a very useful drug prescribed to treat a variety of skin conditions. Also known as tretinoin, this topical treatment can be used to address acne, hyperpigmentation and even wrinkles. Though effective, Retin-A carries some side effects like skin irritation, peeling and redness, so it's important to use the drug specifically as your dermatologist says and follow the package instructions exactly to avoid nasty complications.

Step 1

Use a gentle cleanser on your skin each morning and night to remove dirt, oil and makeup. After patting your face dry, wait 20 minutes before applying the medication.

Step 2

Apply Retin-A once a day at night, just before bedtime.

Step 3

Use your fingertips to apply Retin-A to the area to be treated. Use just a thin layer of the medication to adequately cover the area. Wash your hands well when you are finished.

Step 4

Wait at least six weeks before evaluating your progress on Retin-A. The drug can take that long to start to be effective and for enough layers of skin to have sloughed off to reveal healthier skin underneath.
