Fluoxetine Antidepressant Side Effects

Fluoxetine is the generic name for a medication most commonly known as Prozac. It also is sold under other brand names, including Selfemra, Rapiflux and Sarafem. It is the oldest SSRI or selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor medication on the market, approved in 1987 by the U.S. Food & Drug Administration. Fluoxetine is used in the treatment of depression. It also may be prescribed for other problems such as panic disorders, premenstrual dysphoric disorder, bulimia nervosa and obsessive-compulsive disorder, as well as premature ejaculation.

Motion Side Effects

Because a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor like fluoxetine makes the neurotransmitter serotonin more active in your brain, it can cause some unwanted serious side effects that affect your bodily motions. It actually causes the problem in your brain and you react to this. The primary problems are restlessness and a need to keep moving. You may find it difficult to stay in one position, such as sitting down to talk, watch television or use your computer, when taking fluoxetine. Because these are serious side effects---and quite common with fluoxetine---you need to explain the problems to your doctor immediately.

Sexual Side Effects

As with many antidepressants, fluoxetine can affect your sex life. While these types of common side effects are frustrating and disconcerting, they are not categorized as serious. In most cases, they will disappear as you continue treatment with the drug and your body gets used to it. Most people who suffer these temporary side effects experience a loss of their ability to perform sexually or they find they are not as interested in sexual intercourse as they normally would be.

Flu-Like Side Effects

Fluoxetine can cause side effects that are similar to those associated with influenza and the common cold. These types of side effects typically occur only when you begin treatment with the medicine and go away after a short time. Tell your physician if they remain with you. Side effects may include muscle aches, fever, runny nose, nasal congestion, chills, sore throat, nausea and decreased appetite.

Mental and Physical Side Effects

Taking fluoxetine may cause a few common temporary side effects that affect your mental state. Along with the restlessness mentioned above, you also may feel anxious, although there may be no apparent cause. You also may get attendant nervousness with the anxiety. Your sleep also may be troubled. Physically, you may get fatigued without apparent cause and feel generally weak.
