Football practice can be quite demanding, especially when it comes to pre-season practices during the heat of summer. Coaches ask their players to run, go through tough physical drills and then learn their responsibilities on plays that can be quite complicated, so it's a good idea to know as much as possible about what to expect from football practice ahead of time.
Step 1
Come to practice in the best of shape. You will be put through exercises and drills to make sure you are in good condition. Coaches expect you to be in top cardiovascular shape and to have done strength training all year.
Step 2
Find out what drills you will be asked to do prior to practice. Your coaches may give you an idea of what to expect, or they may not. However, veteran players will tell you what happened in previous seasons. The purpose of these drills is to pinpoint your physical capabilities and how much pressure you can take.
Step 3
Learn your responsibilities according to your team's playbook. Most coaches are going to let you know what type of offense and defense your team will play prior to the start of practice. Know the basics of all the plays you will be involved in before you get there. Coaches will make adjustments to your technique, but you can't come into practice unaware of your team's basic plays.
Step 4
Raise key questions at the appropriate time. Most coaches want to hear questions about the plays they have chosen. If you see a weakness or an issue, it's most likely something an opponent will find as well. Keep your mind open and try to think of the big picture as well as your own individual responsibilities. Coaches like having players who can think for themselves and make intelligent observations.
