1. Get the Right Rod
A proper and sturdy fishing rod is probably the most important piece of deep-sea fishing gear. If the rod is not graded for deep-sea fishing, it will most likely snap when you land the bigger fish that lurk in the deep sea. Two-piece rods are usually the norm with this deep-sea gear. Graphite rods are the most popular choice based on their durability and low weight. Fiberglass rods are also good, but are not as durable and are heavier than the graphite fishing rods. Finally, check what the weight grade is for any rod you purchase. The higher the grade, the larger fish the rod can handle.
2. Reel it In
Once you have a good rod, then you need a deep-sea reel to compliment the rod. Aluminum or stainless-steel reels are the best type because they are rust resistant--that is crucial in salt-water environments. The type of rod you choose will also depend on what type of fish you are trying to catch. If you are trying to snare some larger fish, then be sure the reel carries a grade for that fish.
3. Deep-Sea Fishing Tackle
Depending on where you are deep-sea fishing and what types of fish are running, you need to choose the correct fishing tackle. Artificial lures are far less prominent in deep-sea fishing tackle than they are in fresh-water fishing. Depending on the fishing conditions, you need to have a variety of weights to attach to the leaders to make sure the line and tackle get the necessary fishing depth. The more turbulent the waters ,the larger the weight you should fish with. The fishing line you choose needs to be graded for deep-sea fishing. If it is not, then chances are it will keep snapping, which makes for a frustrating deep-sea fishing experience.
4. Dress for the Occasion
When reeling in the big fish on the deep-sea excursion, a good pair of fishing gloves and jacket are a must. Gloves keep your hands from developing blisters and help you grip the rod. Because of the windy and wet conditions on the deep sea, a jacket that protects your upper body is essential clothing for the deep-sea angler.
5. Fighting Belts and Nets
If you're going deep-sea fishing for fighting fish, such as the marlin, you will need to purchase a fighting belt. This belt is just as it sounds, in that you can place the fishing rod securely into belt as you fight to land that big-game fish. If you are not fishing for a very large fish, you will need to bring a fishing net that allows you to get the fish in the boat. For larger fish, you will use a fishing hook or some other apparatus designed strictly for large-fish capture.
