The Atkins Diet is a strict low-carbohydrate, high-protein diet developed by Dr. Robert Atkins in the 1960s. When most people think of the diet, they think of meat, because meat typically is low in carbs and high in protein. However, not all meats are created equal, and some are better than others to eat during the diet.

Fowl

Fowl (and their eggs) are excellent meats to eat during the Atkins Diet because they are lean and carb-free. Fowl include chickens, turkeys, game birds such as pheasants or partridges, and ducks. The leanest parts of fowl to prepare are typically the white breast meat, without the skin.

Pork

Pork is another lean meat, like fowl, that is an excellent choice for the Atkins diet. The leanest cuts include tenderloin, loin chops or leg. Processed meats like bacon, ham and cold cuts are not recommended on the Atkins diet because they often contain added sugars.

Beef

Beef is a good Atkins meat, though some cuts are leaner than others. The leanest cuts of beef are cuts like round, chuck, sirloin or tenderloin, which can also be trimmed of excess fat before they are prepared. According to the Mayo Clinic, the leanest grades of beef are labeled "Choice or "Select" rather than "Prime," which typically has more fat.

Lamb and Venison

Lamb and venison are two excellent choices of meat to eat on the Atkins Diet. The leanest cuts include tenderloin, loin chops and leg.
