The world is not always a safe place for kids. Several child abductions occur each year, and there are convicted sex offenders living in communities all across the country. Parents can help prepare their children for dangerous situations by giving them some self-defense training. Self-defense training for kids includes giving them the knowledge and the skills to prevent and defend against attacks.
Communication
Simply talking to kids about self-defense is a good start when it comes to training them. Parents and teachers need to open the lines of communication about dangerous people and situations. Kids should understand the difference between good people and bad people. It should be stressed that kids are not to go anywhere with strangers no matter what strangers might say to lure them.
Verbal Self-Defense
A child needs to understand the importance of using his voice if attacked. Yelling things like "stranger danger!" or "help!" will draw attention during potential abductions. Child abductors do not want a lot of attention when they are trying to lure children. Verbal self-defense training can teach kids how to get help or ward off attacks by making lots of noise. It is important to discuss and practice scenarios in which verbal self-defense should be used.
Awareness
Training kids to be aware of their surroundings is another form of self-defense training. Many of today's kids walk around with headphones in their ears while they are texting on their cell phones. This leaves them unaware of suspicious individuals. In order to defend themselves against attacks, children need to be trained to look around when they are out in public. Children should watch for strange people or cars that may be following them. It is also a good idea to steer clear of poorly lit areas or unfamiliar roads.
Martial Arts
Martial arts classes offer the best self-defense training for kids. Many classes teach kids how to break free from different types of grabs. Classes also teach kids how to use punches and kicks to protect themselves, if necessary. Some of the most popular styles of martial arts for kids are tae kwon do, kenpo and karate. Martial arts can also give children the self-esteem and self-confidence to defend themselves.
Warning
Children should be trained to understand that physical techniques for self-defense are not to be used haphazardly. Martial arts techniques should not be used to pick on other kids on the playground at school. They should not be used to fight brothers or sisters either. Parents can practice self-defense techniques with their children and help them understand when to use them. Children will be better prepared for dangerous situations if parents practice self-defense techniques with them on a regular basis.
