Acne breakouts are a common skin condition that is characterized by the appearance of pink to red bumps which can sometimes become infected and puss-filled. Although there are many products on the market that claim to be able to clear the skin, some products work better than others. In order to clear your skin quickly and more effectively, it is helpful to follow a routine that cleanses, medicates and hydrates the skin.

Step 1

Cleanse the skin with a natural, chemical-free soap. Wet your face well with water. Lather up your hands with a natural soap. Spread the lather onto your face, and use your fingers to gently massage it in. Rinse off your face thoroughly with water. Repeat twice per day.

Step 2

Medicate the skin with a 2.5 percent benzoyl peroxide cream. Squeeze a pea-sized amount of benzoyl peroxide cream onto your fingers, and gently spread in onto your skin. Use your fingers to glide over your face until the cream has been completely absorbed into your skin. Repeat twice per day after cleansing.

Step 3

Moisturize the skin with an oil-free lotion designed for sensitive skin. Squeeze a dime-sized amount of oil-free lotion onto your fingers, and gently spread it around your skin until it has soaked in. Repeat twice per day after applying the benzoyl peroxide cream.

Tips and Warnings

  • Natural, chemical-free soaps will not contain harsh ingredients, such as sodium lauryl sulfate, petroleum, mineral oil or artificial perfumes, that can cause the skin to become irritated and inflamed. Look for soaps that contain basic ingredients like beeswax, coconut oil or olive oil. Benzoyl peroxide is a highly effective acne cream that works to eliminate acne by depositing oxygen into the pores, which kill off acne-causing bacteria in the skin. Although there are different strengths of benzoyl peroxide cream on the market, using the lowest strength cream--2.5 percent in concentration--will clear the skin without causing side effects such as peeling, burning or redness. Benzoyl peroxide cream it can be drying on the skin. To avoid over-drying the skin, use an oil-free lotion designed for sensitive skin, which will keep the skin properly hydrated without clogging the pores with comedogenic oils or irritating the skin with artificial perfumes.
