Diclofenac sodium is typically taken in tablet form to alleviate pain associated with arthritis and joint inflammation. Many of the side effects of Diclofenac are mild and occur as an initial response to use. Other side effects and complications can be more serious and should be considered while taking Diclofenac.

Gas and Bloating

According to the Mayo Clinic and the National Institutes of Health, the most common side effects of Diclofenac are bloating and excess gas. While these effects are mild and likely harmless, you should contact you physician if such effects persist or lead to prolonged discomfort.

Peptic Ulcers

Over time, Diclofenac sodium tablets can have side effects on the stomach and gastrointestinal tract. The most common long-term complication from Diclofenac sodium tablet use is peptic ulcers. Misoprostol may be prescribed in combination with Diclofenac to protect the intestinal muscosa and prevent ulcer complications.

Other GI Side Effects

Other GI side effects of Diclofenac such as intestinal bleeding, bloody stool or problems with urination can be signs of serious side effects and should be brought to the attention of a doctor immediately.

Cardiac Side Effects

Dangerous cardiac side effects have been reported in patients taking Diclofenac sodium tablets. These effects include chest pains, shortness of breath, rapid heart beat and flushing of the skin. If you experience cardiac side effects while using Diclofenac sodium, contact your doctor.

Skin Complications

Potentially dangerous complications from Diclofenac use can involve skin reactions. Inform your doctor right away if you experience a loosening of the skin, skin color changes or yellowing of the skin and eyes.
