Skin reactions can occur due to a number of different factors, including contact allergies, touching a poisonous plant or abrasion. When a rash or irritation appears on the skin, it can cause the skin to feel painful and itchy, and can appear red and swollen. Luckily, skin reactions can be treated and relieved by applying a few natural substances that are known to soothe the skin and reduce inflammation. By following a regimen that uses you these treatments, you can effectively reduce skin reactions.

Step 1

Make an oatmeal compress to soothe irritation. In a small bowl, combine 1/2 cup raw oats with 1 cup of boiling water. Allow the oatmeal to cool completely, then spread it onto the affected area. Cover the oatmeal with a wet washcloth, and allow it to remain there for at least 15 minutes. Remove the washcloth after the allotted time has passed, and carefully rinse off the oatmeal. Repeat twice per day until the skin reaction subsides.

Step 2

Use ice to decrease swelling. Fill a plastic bag with crushed ice, and seal the bag tightly. Wrap a washcloth around the bag, and place it onto the skin reaction. Allow the ice to remain on your skin for at least five minutes, then remove the bag and wipe away any water that may have escaped the plastic bag. Apply ice twice per day until the skin reaction has subsided.

Step 3

Apply aloe vera gel to reduce pain and itching. Squeeze around 2 tsp. of pure aloe vera gel into your fingers, and gently spread the gel into the area. Allow the aloe vera gel to completely soak into your skin. Re-apply the aloe vera gel up to three times per day until the skin reactions subsides.

Tips and Warnings

  • Oats are both nutrient-rich and soothing to skin irritations. Applying an oatmeal compress to skin reactions and irritations can help reduce irritation and redness on the skin. It is important to use only raw oats that do not contain coloring, sweeteners or preservatives. Ice helps constrict the capillaries in the skin, and helps reduce swelling in inflamed areas. By applying ice to skin rashes and reactions, redness and swelling can be diminished in the skin. Aloe vera gel has natural anti-inflammatory properties that can reduce inflammation and pain in the skin. For skin reactions that are particularly painful or burn the skin, aloe vera gel can be very helpful in reducing discomfort.
  • If you experience a skin reaction that does not clear within three days, or causes swelling in the face or tongue, seek medical attention right away.
