How to Count Fat Grams

You can calculate the grams of fat you can eat each day based on your daily caloric intake and the percentage of calories in your diet that can come from fat. This calculation is possible because the number of calories in a given amount of fat is the same, regardless of the specific type of food. This calculation is useful when you follow a diet that limits the calories you get from fat to a fixed percentage.

Step 1

Get the percentage of calories in your diet that should come from fat. Assume that your diet limits the calories you get from fat to 25 percent of your total caloric intake.

Step 2

Obtain the total number of calories that you may consume each day. Assume that your diet specifies a total caloric intake of 1,800 calories each day.

Step 3

Compute the number of calories that you can get from fat each day with the following formula: P / 100 x T. The percentage of fat that your diet allows is P and your total caloric intake each day is T. In this example, you can get 25 percent of your calories from fat and you may consume 1,800 calories each day. You may therefore consume 25 / 100 x 1,800 = 450 calories per day from fat.

Step 4

Calculate the number of grams of fat that you may eat each day. A gram of fat has 9 calories so the expression (calories from fat / 9) will provide the number of grams of fat that you can have each day. In this example, you can get 450 calories from fat each day. You may therefore eat 450 / 9 = 50 g of fat per day.
