Shopping for acceptable and preferred foods for the Atkins Diet includes stopping by the dairy, meat and produce sections of the grocery store. Writing down the acceptable foods for the Atkins Diet before you go shopping will help you to plan ahead and avoid pitfall foods that can sabotage the diet plan. Reading nutrition labels on canned foods and paying close attention to the carbohydrate contents will help you purchase appropriate foods for the Atkins Diet.

Protein

Consuming generous amounts of protein, including a variety of meat, poultry and fish is a key component to following the Atkins Diet. An Atkins Diet grocery list may include lean cuts of beef, skinless/boneless chicken breasts, pork chops, turkey, salmon, shrimp and lobster. Eggs are an important source of protein as well and can be cooked in a variety of different ways, including scrambled, poached, hard boiled and used in omelets. Different types of cheeses are appropriate, including cheddar, mozzarella, Swiss, cream cheese and blue cheese.

Produce

Eating two to three cups of certain vegetables is acceptable when following the Atkins Diet. Vegetables low in carbohydrates include lettuce, celery, alfalfa sprouts, mushrooms, red, yellow or green peppers and cucumbers. Other vegetables that are a bit higher in carbohydrate content and eaten in smaller amounts include artichokes, asparagus, broccoli, cabbage, cauliflower, eggplant, spinach, tomatoes, onions and zucchini. Herbs, such as basil, cilantro, garlic, oregano, rosemary and sage, add flavor to meals. Fruits are allowed during later phases of Atkins. Strawberries, raspberries and blueberries are preferred, due to the low carbohydrate content.

Other

Keeping certain ingredients on hand in the pantry, refrigerator or freezer helps to remain committed to Atkins. Plenty of olive oil, peanut oil, red and white vinegars are ideal for cooking. Butter and cans of chicken or beef broth contribute flavor to recipes. Allow a variety of condiments to choose from including mustard, mayonnaise, low sodium soy sauce and sugar-free ketchup and hot sauces. Nuts low in carbohydrate include almonds, walnuts, pecans or macadamia nuts. Sunflower seeds are also low in carbohydrates. Sugar substitutes, sugar-free Popsicles, sugar-free Jello and pudding will cure a sweet tooth while you are on the Atkins Diet.
