Standing on the pitcher's mound takes confidence, strength and determination. It also takes the proper technique to stand on the mound, take signals from the catcher and deliver a pitch. A pitcher uses the pitching mound to get a strong push toward home plate and get momentum on the ball.
Step 1
Walk up to the pitching rubber from behind the mound. Stand on the rubber with your dominant foot across the rubber. Separate the hand with the ball from your gloved hand. Look at the catcher and get his signal for the pitch.
Step 2
Bring your hands together at waist level. Have your weight evenly balanced as you prepare to deliver the pitch. Step with your front foot (left for a right-handed pitcher) toward home plate.
Step 3
Bring your pitching arm up and prepare to deliver the ball. As you get the ball up to head height as you prepare to let go of your pitch, push off the pitching rubber as firmly as you can with your back foot. Throw the ball toward home plate. Come around with your push-off leg so you are in front of the mound and in a position where you can field the ball if it comes back in your direction.
