The low-carb Atkins Diet can lead to weight loss, as long as you follow it correctly. Understanding the science behind the diet, making a commitment to follow Atkins and learning how to abide by the food rules of Atkins are the initial steps. Make Atkins a way of life following the first phases of Induction, Ongoing Weight Loss and Pre-Maintenance.

Fluid Intake

Drinking plenty of water while following the Atkins Diet will help your body adjust to a fat-burning metabolism. Consuming at least 64 oz. of water a day also helps with constipation--a side effect of the Atkins Diet. Limit beverages with caffeine because they can slow weight loss. Add only artificial sweeteners or low-carbohydrate heavy cream to coffee and limit to one to two cups per day. Avoid all alcohol during the first phase of Atkins. Once you've finished the Induction Phase, stick to distilled spirits, such as vodka or gin, and mix them with low-carbohydrate or sugar-free mixers.

Eating Habits

Cooking different combinations of foods, searching for new recipes and mixing up menu items helps you stay interested with Atkins, while staving off boredom and monotony of food choices. Purchase low-carbohydrate cookbooks for new recipes. Pay close attention to nutrition labels--looking specifically at carbohydrate content and digestible grams of fiber. Limit all forms of sugar. Make larges batches of food and freeze for later use. Purchase products specifically designed for Atkins, including snack bars, shakes or low-carbohydrate baking mix.

Monitor Progress

Record your weight when you start Atkins and chart your progress weekly. Take "before" and "after" pictures. Monitoring progress towards a goal helps increase motivation and confidence in the diet. Add an exercise program and nutritional supplements to bolster further weight loss and optimal health. Talk to friends and family about accomplishments or join a support group with others who are on a similar program. Establishing regular times for waking, meals and bed.
