Arthrotec (diclofenac sodium and misoprostol) is a prescription medication indicated for the management of painful symptoms associated with rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis. This medication is composed of two active ingredients: a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (diclofenac sodium) and a drug that protects the lining of the stomach (misoprostol). Discuss the potential side effects associated with Arthrotec with your physician or pharmacist before you begin treatment with this medication.
Stomach Upset
While receiving treatment with Arthrotec, you can develop stomach-related side effects. The most common gastrointestinal side effects associated with Arthrotec use include abdominal pain and diarrhea. In clinical trials for this medication, 21 percent and 19 percent of patients receiving Arthrotec experienced abdominal pain and diarrhea, respectively. You may also experience nausea or gas (flatulence) during treatment. Some patients can develop a painful or burning sensation within the chest or throat (heartburn), which can be uncomfortable and may lead to burping (belching) or an unpleasant or bitter taste within the mouth. Such side effects can be limited or prevented by eating a small snack or meal before taking a dose of this medication. Contact your doctor immediately if you begin vomiting or if you notice blood within your stools while taking Arthrotec, as such side effects may be indicative of intestinal damage or bleeding.
Headache
You can develop headache as a side effect of this medication. Headache symptoms are typically mild and may be accompanied by additional side effects of drowsiness or dizziness. Speak with your doctor as soon as possible if you experience vision problems, such as blurred or double vision, in addition to headache while taking Arthrotec.
Swelling
Certain people can experience abnormal swelling of the feet, ankles or hands, while taking this medication, warn health professionals at the Better Health Channel, an informational health website provided by the Australian government. Water retention caused by swelling can also lead to unintended weight gain in some patients during Arthrotec treatment. Swelling of your extremities can cause these regions of your body to become tender or painful to the touch and may interfere with your ability to move about normally. If such side effects develop, contact your doctor for additional guidance and care.
Abnormal Vaginal Bleeding
Women who take Arthrotec can experience abnormal vaginal bleeding between menstrual periods as a side effect of this medication. Such side effects can be accompanied by breast pain or abdominal cramping and should be discussed with your physician or gynecologist if they occur.
