Rivotril is a Canadian brand name of clonazepam, a prescription anti-seizure medication. It is sold in the United States as Klonopin. Rivotril, along with being used in the treatment of Lennox-Gastaut syndrome and myoclonic and akinetic seizures, also may be used for patients who suffer from panic disorders. It is a benzodiazepine drug that works by reducing the speed of your nervous system.
Addiction
Benzodiazepines are known to be highly addictive, the American Academy of Family Physicians website states. As with most addictive drugs, benzodiazepines only make you dependent upon them if you use them for a long time. The AAFP states clonazepam is one of the most prescribed drugs in the world. Addiction means your body has become dependent upon the drug and its cessation can cause such problems as anxiety, blurry vision, nausea and insomnia, among others, according to Benzo.org.
Pain and Fatigue
Pain is a common but serious side effect of taking Rivotril. It can occur throughout your body as aches in your extremities or torso. Pain also may occur in your head. Fatigue, another serious common side effect of the medication, can take the form of abnormal tiredness and weakness, even if you have not exerted yourself in work or exercise. Medical advice will be required for any of these types of side effects, so explain them to your physician immediately.
Mental Side Effects
Your mental state can be affected by taking Rivotril. You can, for example, feel discouraged without external reasons. You also may experience such feelings as emptiness and sadness when taking the medicine. Rivotril may make it difficult to concentrate on simple tasks and may make you irritable. You may lose your normal interest in things you enjoy and you may not feel pleasure at your regular levels. These, too, are serious side effects, so tell your doctor immediately about them.
Coordination Problems
Rivotril has the potential to cause problems with your coordination. You may be unsteady when you walk or move. You also may tremble and not be able to control your muscles properly with the medication. You may feel shaky all over, particularly when you walk. This may be compounded by another common side effect, abnormal drowsiness.
