Going away to college is a time of transition. This is when many young people are living on their own for the first time. With this, finding new friends, interests and activities can make a young person seem distant from her high school friends.
Step 1
Keep in touch on a regular basis. Set a time each week to talk on the phone or try texting and online social networks (i.e., Facebook).
Step 2
Remember birthdays. Chances are you and your high school friends celebrated all your birthdays, so at the very least, a phone call or sending a card will show your high school friends you still care about them.
Step 3
Tell your high school friends about your new interests and activities. Chances are they might either want to get involved, giving you a new common bond, or they are trying new things themselves. Don't worry about being judged. If your friends are really your friends, they will be happy you found something you enjoy.
Step 4
Plan a weekend get together. Invite your friends to spend the weekend at your college, meet them at home or visit their college. Make sure the traveling is somewhat equal. If you never travel to meet them, this can limit the number of times you will spend together.
Step 5
Keep old traditions. If you have an annual tradition with your high school friends, keep doing it. Nothing maintains friendships like an activity that you and your friends remember well.
Tips and Warnings
- Even though you are be busy adjusting to your new life, a few minutes a day or an hour a week is all you need to keep up with your friends from high school.
- Be honest with your high school friends. If you can't make it home for a weekend, tell them upfront instead of waiting until the last minute or not showing up. If you really want to maintain your friendship, honesty is necessary.
