Menstrual cramps have a profound effect on millions of women every month. They can disrupt a woman's work, family and social activities. While there are numerous chemical remedies on the market, proper diet and healthy food choices can help reduce the effects of menstrual cramps.

Flax Seed

Menstrual cramps are partially caused by the release of prostaglandins into the body's uterine tissue. The uterus spasms when prostaglandins are released, causing abdominal pains. Flax seed contains Omega-3 fatty acids, which can inhibit the release of prostaglandins. Flax seeds can be added to foods such as smoothies, casseroles, omelettes or yogurt.

Fish Oil

Fish oil can help relieve menstrual cramps in two ways. Like flax seed, it suppresses the production of prostaglandins in the body. It also inhibits the conversion of linoleic acid to arachidonic acid, an enzyme needed for the production of prostaglandins. A study conducted at the University of Cincinnati Medical Cente, headed by Z. Harel in 1996, showed a significant decrease in menstrual pain among women who were given fish oil. Fish oil is found in fish, and can also be added to the diet via a nutritional supplement capsule.

Vegetables, Fruits and Nuts

Eating plenty of fruits and vegetables can help promote overall good health, which can make the body less susceptible to menstrual cramps. They can also prevent feelings of bloating and sluggishness. Foods with calcium and magnesium can also help alleviate menstrual cramps. Pecans and hazelnuts offer both calcium and magnesium.
