Stretch marks are scars that appear when the skin is pulled quickly, which occurs during rapid weight gain, rapid weight loss and pregnancy. The marks can be indented and are usually white, purple, red or pink. They are most common on the abdomen, breasts, thighs and hips. Although stretch marks fade on their own over time, their appearance can be reduced in the meantime through methods, such as tanning. Obtaining an actual tan from the sun or a tanning bed is not effective, however, because stretch marks cannot tan. Tanning the skin around the marks will only make them stand out more. The solution to this is a sunless tanning cream, which can temporarily dye the stretch marks and surrounding skin.

Step 1

Obtain a bottle of sunless tanning lotion or cream. Look for a brand that is easy to apply and is streak-free.

Step 2

Wash your skin thoroughly, especially the areas with stretch marks. Exfoliate with a body scrub or exfoliating cloth to remove dead skin cells on the surface of your skin.

Step 3

Apply the sunless tanning lotion to your skin. Start with just a thin layer, and be sure to wash your hands thoroughly afterward. Use the lotion sparingly on your elbows, knees and ankles.

Step 4

Wait a few hours for the lotion to set into your skin and dry. You can apply a second layer if necessary.

Step 5

Apply more sunless tanning lotion after a few weeks, when the old application has worn off.

Tips and Warnings

  • Stretch marks will be best covered with sunless tanning lotion when they are older marks. If you do not have success the first time, wait until the marks area little older and try again. If you are concerned about your stretch marks, talk to your doctor. He may be able to recommend treatment, such as microdermabrasion or laser therapy.
