Puffiness under the eyes can be quite bothersome. Whether treating puffiness caused by a sleepless night or a case of allergies, some simple remedies can reduce that puffiness before you put on your makeup for the day. Remedying under-eye puffiness can help you feel more confident and look more alert, ready to tackle the day ahead.

Step 1

Place used tea bags over your eyes for 10 to 15 minutes. Choose any tea that you like, and wrap the tea bags in tissues before placing them on your eyes to prevent staining your skin. Teas contain an ingredient known as tannin, which helps reduce puffiness.

Step 2

Apply a cold compress to your eyes. Wet a washcloth with cool water, then wring it out. Rest it gently on your eyes until the cloth warms. Rinse and repeat the process three or four more times for best results.

Step 3

Slice a raw potato or cucumber, and refrigerate the pieces so they are cool. Relax with your head tilted back or lie down, and place the cool slices on your eyes for 15 to 20 minutes. Remove the slices from your eyes, and rinse your eyes with warm water.

Tips and Warnings

  • Prevent puffy eyes from developing by getting seven to nine hours of sleep each night. Sleep with an additional pillow under your head to drain excess fluid from the face and prevent retention under the eyes. Drink eight to 10 glasses of water each day, and avoid drinks containing caffeine or alcohol to prevent water retention. Avoid smoking, which can contribute to puffy skin as well. Take a dose of allergy medication if your puffiness is caused by allergies. Allergies are a common cause of puffy eyes, so taking medication to address allergy symptoms may be the solution you need. Read and follow the dosage directions as provided by the manufacturer or your doctor. An over-the-counter medicine may be sufficient, but if it is not effective, talk to your doctor about getting a prescription that may produce more results.
