Most people experience acne breakouts at some point in their lives, but acne most commonly occurs during puberty, menstruation, pregnancy and menopause. There are many different types of acne, which can range from mild acne papules, to more severe, deep acne nodules that develop under the skin. For larger cystic and nodular acne under the skin, it is helpful to use stronger acne-fighting products that will help kill off acne-causing bacteria more quickly.

Step 1

Cleanse your skin thoroughly using a tea tree oil soap. Wet the bar of soap well, and rub it in your hands to create a rich lather. Spread the lather onto your skin, covering the entire area well, then rinse it off with water. Repeat two times per day.

Step 2

Medicate your skin deeply using a 10% benzoyl peroxide cream. Squirt a pea-sized amount of 10 percent benzoyl peroxide cream onto your fingers, and apply it to the individual acne breakouts. Avoid applying the cream to skin that is not effected by acne. Repeat two times per day after cleansing.

Step 3

Moisturize your skin regularly using an oil-free moisturizer. Squirt a dime-sized amount of oil-free lotion onto your skin, and massage it in gently until it soaks in. Repeat twice per day after treating your skin with benzoyl peroxide cream.

Tips and Warnings

  • Tea tree oil works to clear acne by killing the bacteria on the skin that causes acne to form. To cleanse your skin effectively, while treating large acne at the same time, it is highly effective to use a soap that contains tea tree oil. Avoid scrubbing your skin, which can cause irritation and can exacerbate large acne. Benzoyl peroxide cream helps clear acne by releasing oxygen into the pores, which kills off bacteria that causes acne breakouts. While the lower concentrations of benzoyl peroxide, such as 2.5 percent or 5 percent, can clear mild to moderate acne effectively, more severe acne may require using the strongest concentration of benzoyl peroxide cream, which is 10 percent. When using the 10 percent benzoyl peroxide cream, it is important to only apply the cream to the areas effected by large acne nodules, and to avoid spreading it onto skin that it clear. Otherwise, the clear skin can become irritated and inflamed. Using benzoyl peroxide cream without re-hydrating the skin can cause the skin to become overly dry. This can be avoided by applying an oil-free moisturizer, which will hydrate the skin without clogging the pores.
