Lap-Band surgery is a type of gastric bypass procedure in which the size of a person's stomach is decreased. This decreases the patient's ability to overeat because it causes a feeling of fullness very early on when eating. Lap-Band surgery has helped many people to successfully lose weight. Though some people think you can eat anything and still lose weight after the lapband surgery, the reality is, it is important to follow the right type of diet and avoid certain foods.

Candy

It is important to avoid eating candy or other high-sugar foods after having Lap-Band surgery. The official Lap-Band website recommends that people who have had the surgery avoid eating empty-calorie foods like candy. Most candies have no vitamins or minerals and a lot of sugar. After surgery, your stomach will become full very quickly, so if you eat empty-calorie foods, you won't have enough room to consume nutritious foods, and you may not be able to get enough of the vitamins and minerals you need. According to the University of Rochester Bariatric Center, foods high in sugar should be avoided after the Lap-Band surgery because they do not stay in the stomach for a long enough time period, so they may move quickly to the intestines, causing severe diarrhea known as dumping syndrome.

Carbonated Drinks

Another important thing to avoid after having the Lap-Band surgery is carbonated drinks like soda. Regular sodas, which have a lot of sugar, may lead to dumping syndrome, according to the University of Rochester Bariatric Center. Additionally, the carbonation in these beverages may cause you to become very full so that you have a difficult time getting enough nutrients from foods, according to the University of California at San Diego Medical Center. The official Lab-Band website also states that drinking carbonated drinks can make the size of the pouch in the stomach swell, which may be uncomfortable.

French Fries

French fries and other high-fat or fried foods should be avoided by people who have hand the Lap-Band procedure. The University of Rochester Bariatric Center explains that high-sugar foods are not the only foods that cause diarrhea for gastric bypass patients. High-fat and greasy foods may also lead to dumping syndrome for people who have had the Lap-Band procedure. "U.S. News and World Report" adds that foods which are high in fat are counterproductive for a person who has had the Lap-Band surgery because it can lead to weight gain, while Lap-Band patients are trying to lose weight.

Nuts

Though foods rich in fiber are generally healthy, the Lap-Band company explains that eating nuts may pose a problem to someone who has had Lap-Band surgery. This is because they can get stuck in the stomach opening created by the lapband surgery, which may cause pain, discomfort and even the need for possible medical intervention. Nuts are also high in fat which can cause you to become full too quickly.
