A human's hair grows at a rate of a half an inch per month, or about six inches each year. Unfortunately, there isn't really much that can be done to make your hair grow any faster than that. However, by taking the proper precautions to prevent damage and promote healthy growth, you can have your hair grow longer at the fastest rate possible.

Step 1

Get a haircut or trim, whichever is necessary to cut away damage that already exists. Do not hesitate to lose a little extra length initially. Hair that is damaged, weakened or split will move up the strand of the hair, preventing optimal growth. Get a regular trim every six to eight weeks to eliminate damage.

Step 2

Limit the damage to your hair from styling. Comb hair gently and do not brush it too much, especially when it is wet. Avoid the use of crimpers, straightening irons, hot rollers and curling irons when possible. When styling with heat, first apply a protecting product to minimize the damage.

Step 3

Style hair with looser styles and use clips and holders that are made to minimize breaking or pulling out hair strands. Avoid tight braids or ponytails when possible.

Step 4

Use high-quality shampoos, conditioners and other hair care products. Consider asking your stylist what is recommended for your personal hair type. Read the label for ingredients like silicone and ammonium laurel sulfate, which damage hair. Also, avoid washing your hair in hot water. Use lukewarm water instead.

Step 5

Take a basic multivitamin every day. Don't waste money on expensive vitamins that claim to speed up hair growth, as a standard over-the-counter vitamin will provide adequate nutrients for optimal hair growth.

Step 6

Eat healthy, nutritious foods each day to provide necessary nutrients to your hair. Eat foods that are high in sugar or fat sparingly. Avoid smoking, as well as caffeinated or carbonated drinks, altogether. Include a variety of fruits and vegetables, as well as healthy proteins like fish, eggs, tofu, beans and yogurt, according to the Mayo Clinic.

Step 7

Provide your body with adequate rest and relaxation time. Too much stress can negatively affect hair growth. Consider activities such as meditation or yoga to reduce stress. Sleep for between seven and nine hours each night.
