The way to win a basketball game is to score more points than your opponent. To score, you must know how to shoot the basketball well. There are four main shot types in basketball: the layup, set shot, jump shot, and three-point shot. Each shot is used in different circumstances, using different skills.
Layup
The layup is the most basic shot in basketball. Players should master the layup before focusing on any other styles of shooting. Layups are shot from very close range--almost directly under the basket and slightly off to one side. Unlike other shots in basketball, using the backboard is necessary for layups. A right-handed layup is shot with the right hand. Hold the ball in the right palm and maintain a 90-degree bend in the elbow. Jump off the left leg and bend the right knee. Both the right knee and elbow should be bent during this shot. As you reach the peak of your jump, release the ball, aiming for the upper-right corner of the backboard. The ball should bounce off that corner and drop through the net. A left-handed layup is completed in the same way, using the left hand instead of the right.
Set Shot
A set shot is also a basic shot in basketball. Players should use the set shot to practice their shooting form, from the way they hold the ball to their follow-through. Though the feet remain on the ground during a set shot, players should still bend their knees when shooting to achieve maximum power from the legs. A foul shot is an example of a set shot. Set shots are not seen much during basketball games. Keeping the feet on the ground is not especially effective when trying to shoot over a defender. Most of the time, set shots are used to practice shooting form or when shooting foul shots.
Jump Shot
The jump shot is the most versatile shot in basketball and can be taken from anywhere on the court. The jump shot is similar to the set shot, but instead of leaving the feet on the ground, players shoot the ball while jumping. The ball is typically released when the player has reached the apex of his jump, to maximize height. Players can modify elements of their jump shots--developing fade away jumpers, jump shots off of a drive or off of a pass. Using the strong muscles of the legs allows players to focus on controlling the upper body, which is necessary for successful shooting.
Three Point Shot
A three point shot is taken from outside the three point line. The three point line is an arc that encircles the lane. Its distance from the basket depends on the level of play. The NBA three point line is farther from the basket than for amateur players. Most players use a jump shot when shooting a three pointer. Well-developed arm and chest muscles will also assist players in becoming better three point shooters.
