Estradiol is a form of estrogen necessary for the normal sexual development of the female and for normal regulation of the menstrual cycle, according to the Mayo Clinic. Estradiol creams are applied to the vagina and are absorbed through the vaginal wall. This form of estradiol is used to treat specific symptoms of menopause, including dryness, burning and itching of the vaginal area, in addition to urinary urgency or irritation. Before using any medication, you should be aware of the possible side effects and what to do if you experience them.

Nervous System Side Effects

According to Drugs.com, estradiol cream can affect the nervous system. These effects include migraine headaches, dizziness, faintness, changes in vision or speech, and depression. These effects occur because estradiol is a hormone that can travel throughout the body and affect neurotransmitters in the nervous system to cause these symptoms. In addition, Drugs.com states that estradiol can increase risk of stroke. Therefore, seek immediate medical treatment if you experience any of these neurological irregularities.

Reproductive System Side Effects

Topical estradiol can affect processes of the female reproductive system due to increased levels of estrogen. These effects include abnormal vaginal bleeding, decreased sex drive, changes in the menstrual cycle or break-through bleeding, swollen breasts and breast lumps, reports Drugs.com. Be sure to tell your doctor about these effects because she may be able to adjust the dosage to reduce them. You should also perform regular self-breast exams because estradiol can increase your risk of breast cancer.

Cardiovascular System Side Effects

Estradiol cream can also affect the cardiovascular system and cause shortness of breath, chest pain and water retention. Always seek immediate medical treatment if you are experiencing chest pain or shortness of breath. Alert your doctor if you experience water retention, because an adjustment in your dose may help relieve this side effect.
