Dieting can be a difficult process for many people. It isn't just about changing what you eat, it is also a change in lifestyle. This is where counseling can help. The objectives of counseling can vary for each individual but all must begin with assessing a person's overall health, eating habits and relationship with food. Then setting concrete goals can be done.

Assess Health Issues

It is common knowledge that extra weight contributes to health problems. And the first objective of diet counseling is to assess a person's health. For example if someone is diabetic, a nutritionist can help develop a specific food plan keeping carbohydrate intake at a minimum. If one is on medications, a medical consultation will be an important part of the plan. Thyroid problems or other metabolic issues can make weight loss difficult. Untreated, these issues set up road blocks to weight loss regardless of diet planning.

Consider Mental Health

In addition to health problems, certain mental health issues must be assessed. An eating disorder is a prime example. The counselor will determine if dieting compounds an already present eating issues and if there are other compulsive behaviors around food. One of the important objectives of diet counseling is to assess these factors, as they will affect how to proceed. In the case of an eating disorder more intensive therapy would be indicated.

Determine Personal Goals

While those who seek diet counseling are generally most interested in losing weight, there can be other motivating factors. For example, people with health problems such as diabetes or heart disease may simply need guidance in finding healthier food choices. Therefore one of the first objectives in counseling is to determine specific goals. Each goal must be realistic and attainable, taking into account a person's level of motivation and focus.

Make a Food Plan

An individual food plan must include what to eat as well as how much and how frequently. It must take into consideration that gradual changes tend to have lasting effects, and sudden changes--such as rapid weight loss--tend to be less successful in the long term.

Create an Exercise Routine

Diet counseling must take all facets of health into consideration. A big part of this is exercise. Implementing an appropriate level of physical activity is a crucial part of being healthy. Finding activities that fit your personal style will have lasting benefits. For some that means joining a gym, for others it may begin by walking a few times per week. But the benefits are not just physical. Exercise has a profound effect on mental well-being. It increases body awareness and releases endorphins, which naturally help alleviate stress and elevate mood.

Change Attitudes

One of the more important objectives of diet counseling is to help a person change her attitudes toward food and strengthen her awareness of what mental, physical or emotional cues may trigger unhealthy eating--such as stress and boredom. Understanding these triggers and finding healthier ways to cope with them must be addressed to ensure maintained success.
