Monthly pedicures are a luxury that some simply cannot afford. But with all of the abuse your feet take each day, your toes can look calloused, rough and ugly without proper care. Give yourself full pedicure at home with the help of a pumice stone. Its abrasive surface is effective in removing calloused, rough and dry skin, and you can use it anywhere your skin needs a little extra care.
Step 1
Soak your feet for at least five to 10 minutes. Make sure that the water is hot, and add some essential oils or lemons to the hot water to make your home pedicure even more relaxing. Soaking your feet helps to soften the hardened and rough skin so that the pumice stone can be even more effective in removing dead skin.
Step 2
Apply the pumice stone to your foot, and begin rubbing in small, circular motions. Allow the stone to do the work; do not apply excessive pressure that could tear your skin. Instead, go over the same area several times to smooth it out.
Step 3
Use the pumice stone several days in a row if you are trying to remove an especially thick callus. Remove a small portion of the callus every day so as not to aggravate your skin.
Step 4
Apply a thick, emollient lotion. After using a pumice stone, the skin underneath will likely be delicate and soft, so be sure that you protect it. It's a good idea to pumice your feet at night, smooth on lotion and then sleep in socks to allow the lotion to sink into the skin.
Step 5
Clean your pumice stone after each use. Add an antibacterial soap to the stone and work up a lather by using a stiff-bristled brush to work the soap into the stone. Not washing your stone after use could leave bacteria on it, which in turn could lead to foot fungus. Hang the stone to dry.
