Ibuprofen sodium is a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) that works by reducing chemical signals in your body that cause pain. In addition, ibuprofen sodium is used to reduce fever, treat pain or inflammation caused by headache, toothache, back pain, arthritis, menstrual cramps or minor injury, according to Drugs.com. An article in the International Journal of Clinical Pharmacology and Therapeutics, ibuprofen sodium (sometimes called sodium ibuprofen) is a newer formulation that has been shown to have a quicker onset of action in comparison to conventional ibuprofen. Although fairly safe, you should be aware of the possible side effects of taking ibuprofen sodium and when to seek treatment for them.

Gastrointestinal Upset

The most common side effects of using ibuprofen sodium are related to the gastrointestinal system. These effects include black, bloody or tarry stools, coughing up blood, vomit that looks like coffee grounds, upset stomach, mild heartburn, diarrhea and constipation. These effects occur because ibuprofen sodium blocks certain chemical signals that help protect the lining of your gastrointestinal tract. Therefore, taking ibuprofen sodium for the long-term can increase your risk of gastrointestinal bleeding. Seek immediate medical treatment if you are noticing changes in your stool color, have stomach pain or are vomiting blood.

Nervous System Disturbances

Ibuprofen sodium may cause weakness, slurred speech, problems with vision or balance, headache, sensitivity to light, seizure, ringing in your ears or nervousness, states the Mayo Clinic. This occurs because ibuprofen sodium inhibits chemical signals that alter the levels of neurotransmitters in your nervous system. Seek immediate medical treatment if you are experiencing any of these symptoms.

Chest Pain and Weight Gain

Drugs.com states that ibuprofen sodium may cause chest pain, shortness of breath or rapid weight gain. This occurs because ibuprofen may have an unwanted effect on your blood vessels. Seek emergency medical care if you are having chest pain or shortness of breath for any reason. A change in dosage may help with your rapid weight gain.

Reduced Urination

You may note that you are urinating less than usual or not at all, states Drugs.com. Urinary retention can lead to more serious health problems; therefore, you should immediately let your doctor know if you are having difficulty with urination.
