Over the past few years, at-home tooth-whitening systems have become increasingly popular. The systems typically cost less than $100 and are relatively cheap when compared to expensive in-office treatments. Popular manufacturers of tooth-whitening systems include Crest, Bright Smile and Dramatic Smiles. If you are unhappy with the results of at-home teeth-whitening products, speak to your dentist about purchasing a professional system for home use.

Step 1

View the type of applicator that is used by the tooth-whitening system. Strips will likely only whiten the front teeth. However, systems with whitening trays affect all teeth.

Step 2

Find out the time frame that you need to apply the whitening solution. On average, systems require that you use the whitening solution for a one- to two-week period. You may need to apply the bleaching topical solution once or twice a day.

Step 3

Look at whether the whitening system has carbamide peroxide or hydrogen peroxide as the active ingredient. According to the Consumer Guide to Dentistry, carbamide peroxide is preferred for at-home whitening because it works in a more gradual manner by slowly breaking down into hydrogen peroxide.

Step 4

Review the packaging of the various teeth-whitening systems available. Buy versions that are marked with the American Dental Association's Seal of Acceptance. This means that the whitener has been reviewed and accepted by the organization. This allows you to be assured that it meets the standards and effectiveness set forth by the ADA.

Step 5

Compare the concentration of carbamide peroxide. Current formulations on the market will have 10, 16 or 22 percent carbamide peroxide. According to the American Dental Association website, the 10 percent carbamide peroxide formulation is the only type with the ADA Seal of Acceptance.

Step 6

Determine the costs of the tooth-whitening systems. You are likely to find that generic versions cost less than name-brand products with the same active ingredients.
