The world is a fascinating place for even its tiniest inhabitants. From day one, your baby is growing, learning and developing. As parents, your job is to help your little one learn and grow through play, stimulation and lots of tender, loving care. Even the simplest activities are essential for early child development, and fun games, silly songs and daily tasks can promote growth and development in your little one.
Infant Development
Newborns may seem like all they do is eat, sleep and soil their diapers, but they're learning things all the time. According to the Mayo Clinic, newborns develop enhanced eyesight and hearing within just a few weeks, and they can begin to respond to familiar sounds and sights, like your voice and your face. Within two months, newborns begin the earliest methods of communication, like smiling and making those cute cooing noises. And, says the Mayo Clinic, baby will learn to grab objects, kick chubby little legs and develop stronger neck muscles within the first few months.
Infant Care and Playtime
Of course, your baby needs the essentials: food, naps and a clean diaper. You can also promote development in the times when your little one is awake. Snuggling up to baby, when asleep or awake, encourages a feeling of love and security, says the Mayo Clinic. Even just letting baby stare at your face while you make silly faces gets her brain growing and developing. Talking to your baby frequently promotes the basics that a baby needs to learn to speak and communicate. And "tummy time" allows a baby a new view on the world, while strengthening head and neck muscles. Entertain baby with a brightly colored toy, suggests the Mayo Clinic, or by making sounds or playing music.
Toddler Development
The toddler years allow parents to see their baby growing into a little individual, complete with her own personality, likes and dislikes. Toddlers are learning to walk and run, as they fine-tune the motor skills that they began to develop as babies, according to the Nemours Foundation. They're learning to eat table food, and they are even developing their vocabularies, responding to words and learning to talk.
Toddler Care and Playtime
Safety is important at this early childhood stage, says the U.S. National Library of Medicine. Take care around the house to prevent falls down the stairs and to deter your curious toddler from getting into household cleaners and other dangerous products. Protect your child with baby gates and locks on cupboards and cabinets, and make sure that your mobile toddler is constantly supervised, says the NLM. Introducing a variety of healthy foods will start developing your child's taste for a healthy diet, says the Nemours Foundation. This is the time to let your little one explore, whether crawling, walking or running, instead of keeping her cooped up in a swing or crib all day, says Nemours. A regular routine, with scheduled nap time, playtime and mealtime, will help a young child's development and happiness.
Encouraging Your Child's Development
Even the littlest babies can learn and play. Listening to music, singing songs, reading books, playing with toys and talking promote a young child's development. Encourage physical activity with lots of stretching and playtime, and crawling, walking and running around when your little one is able. If you have any questions or concerns about your young child's development or how to care for her, you should speak with your child's pediatrician.
