As you age, you are more prone to bags under the eyes as the muscles that support your eyelids weaken and the skin around the eyes thin out. In addition, fluid and fat can accumulate under the eyes and give the area a puffy appearance. However, there are several easy fixes to relieve under-eye bags. If these methods do not help, speak to your doctor about more aggressive treatment options. For instance, blepharoplasty is a surgical procedure that removes excess fat and skin under the lower eyelid.
Step 1
Sleep seven to eight hours a night. Bags under the eyes are most often associated with not enough rest.
Step 2
Use an extra pillow. Elevating your head above the rest of your body can prevent fluid from accumulating under the eyes. If your mattress can be adjusted, you can also raise the head of your bed.
Step 3
Wash your face with cold water. Get your circulation moving by splashing your face with cold water. While washing your face, tap the under-eye area to move out any excess fluid.
Step 4
Reduce swelling with a diuretic. If the under-eye puffiness is only happening on an occasional basis, you can see if your doctor will allow you to take a diuretic. Diuretics are available at any pharmacy and can be purchased over the counter.
Step 5
Place cold teabags on the eyes. Teabags moistened with cold water can reduce any swelling. According to the Mother Nature website, the tannin found in the tea can help pull the skin tight. If you don't have teabags available, cucumber slices chilled in the fridge also can be used.
Tips and Warnings
- If you suspect allergies are the cause of your under-eye bags, you may need to ask your doctor if you can take an antihistamine to relieve your symptoms. Avoid common allergens as well, such as feathers, dust and pollen.
