The pros make golf swings look effortless and fluid, but there's quite a bit of technique involved. Perfecting a good golf swing takes lots of work, hours of practice and the ability to adapt your swing to your body. You can't expect to hit the perfect shot on your first swing--or even your hundredth. But there are some basic steps that you can follow in order to have a quality golf swing. Note that all instructions should be reversed if you are left-handed and using left-handed clubs.

Step 1

Place the club head directly behind the golf ball. This is where you will start your swing and where you want the club head to be on impact. Grip the club with both hands and squeeze the grip with moderate strength--not too tight, or your swing will be rigid, but not too loose, or the club might slip out of your hands.

Step 2

Bring the club head back 90 degrees from the starting position until it is pointing directly to your left. Rotate your wrists so that the face of the club is pointing up at the sky. Begin to shift your weight to the inside of your left foot and the outside of your right foot.

Step 3

Bend your wrists and bring your arms up so that your left arm is close to your chin, and the club shaft is as close to parallel to the ground as possible. This will require you to bend your right elbow and shift more weight to your right side. Try at all times to keep your head down and looking at the ball as much as possible.

Step 4

shift your body weight back to your left side in one fluid motion, then bring the club head down in the same trajectory as your back swing, while keeping your head still and eyes on the ball. Rotate your wrists so the face of the club head is facing the ball at impact.

Step 5

Follow through by mirroring the trajectory of the back swing as you move your hands through the ball, up and around the left side of your body. Hold this follow-through position until you see the ball land.

Tips and Warnings

  • You may need to make slight adjustments to your swing depending on your body type. Some larger players may not be able to get the club shaft parallel to the ground on the back swing.
