Scars are permanent markings left behind on the skin after sustaining an injury. Other skin conditions like acne can also leave behind scars. Although over time a scar may fade in appearance, it will not completely go away unless treatment is sought. In most cases scar removal is for cosmetic reasons and treatment options may not be covered by your insurance plan.
Steroid Injections
Steroid injections are typically most appropriate for raised scars. Steroid injections over a prolonged period may reduce the size of the scars, and you will need to receive monthly injections of cortisone for a three- to six-month period for the steroid to work. You will need to see a dermatologist or plastic surgeon to receive the injections.
Fillers
Although collagen and fat injections can level out sunken markings, the results only last about six months per injection. Fillers are injected directly into the skin surrounding the scar to plump it up and make the area level.
Laser Therapy
Laser scar removal can usually be done on both raised and depressed types of scars. During the procedure a concentrated laser moves over the scar to minimize the appearance of scars and to stimulate new collagen production. Multiple treatments may be required for the permanent removal of the scar.
Surgical Removal
The most aggressive type of treatment is surgical scar removal. However, since surgery increases the risk of permanent scarring, it is not recommended for hypertrophic and keloid scars. These markings are raised upon the surface of the skin. Surgical procedures, like punch grafting, will cost more than receiving injections of fillers to treat scars. During punch grafting, the scar is removed and then a skin graft is placed as a covering on the area.
Topical Products
Although there are many over-the-counter topical ointments and creams that claim to get rid of scars, there has not been a specific product proven to offer permanent results. The active ingredients in these treatments may include vitamin E or cocoa butter. Since the topical treatment needs to penetrate through the layers of the skin, you will likely need to apply the product for several weeks or more until you notice a difference. However, since insurance does not typically cover cosmetic procedures like scar removal, you may find this option the most affordable.
