Like every organ of the human body, the skin needs vitamins and other nutrients to maintain optimal health. One of the most important vitamins for the human skin is vitamin E. There are several uses of this vitamin that can help improve physical appearance, even as toxins and aging threaten your skin's useful appearance.

Protection Against the Sun

Vitamin E provides protection against the damaging effects of the sun's rays on the skin. This vitamin helps counter the early stages of ultraviolet (UV) ray damage, and improves the effectiveness of sunscreen lotions. For optimal protection, you should apply vitamin E about 20 minutes before exposure to the sun.

Skin Disease Control

Topical and vitamin E application has been used to treat skin diseases such as psoriasis. Vitamin E capsules have also been used to treat erythema, a skin disease characterized by painful red lumps.

Antioxidant Protection

Topical vitamin E lotions are used to provide antioxidant protection, which helps shield the skin against UV rays and other toxins known to cause skin cancer. This vitamin increases the effectiveness of lycopene and other cartenoids, which prevent carcinogenic damage from free radicals.

Scar Treatment

Anecdotal evidence shows vitamin E can reduce the appearance of burns and surgical scars. The effect of this vitamin on scar tissue has not been verified--some studies show substantial improvement, while others suggest that it may actually increase the prominence of scar tissue.
