Demerol Shot Side Effects

Demerol is the brand name in the United States of the generic meperidine hydrochloride. It is a narcotic analgesic used most often in the treatment of severe pain. Because it is a narcotic, it has the potential to be addictive. In most cases, since it is administered by medical professionals in hospitals and clinics, it cannot be used for a long period. This cuts down on the possibility of addiction. If it is taken for a long time, however, dependence can develop.

Abdominal Side Effects

Along with its desired effect of decreasing severe pain, Demerol can induce some common side effects in the abdominal region. It can, for example, cause nausea and vomiting. It also can decrease appetite, which can make it harder to maintain strength. The medicine also may throw off the body's routine, which can make the intestines remove too much fluid while digesting food. This can result in hard stools and constipation. Some patients also have trouble trying to urinate when taking this medication. All of these are considered non-serious side effects unless they continue beyond the initial use of Demerol, the National Institutes of Health reports.

Mental Side Effects

Apart from the possibility of mental and physical addiction and dependence upon Demerol, the medicine also can alter mood. This could be seen in mood swings or a different range of moods than normal. The medication also can cause dizziness, lightheadedness or drowsiness.

Lung and Heart Side Effects

Demerol, along with other narcotic analgesics, can cause potentially serious side effects that affect breathing and heart function. Drugs.com states Demerol can depress the respiratory system, meaning breathing may not be at its normal level. Heart attacks, shock and respiratory arrest are potential severe side effects of the drug. If you have trouble breathing when being injected with the medicine, or if you feel your heart is acting abnormally, seek medical attention immediately.
