Pimples and breakouts are a common skin condition that is usually treated with chemical acne products, such as benzoyl peroxide cream or salicylic acid. For people suffering with both acne breakouts and sensitive or aging skin, using chemical acne products can cause severe skin irritation and redness. To prevent this, it is helpful to follow a skin care routine that uses products around the home. You will find these common home products are just as effective at clearing the skin as the chemical products are.

Step 1

Cleanse your skin with oatmeal. Pour 1/2 cup of raw, ground oats into a bowl, and drizzle 1 cup of boiling water onto them. Massage the oatmeal mixture onto your face using slow, circular finger movements. After three or four minutes, rinse off your skin thoroughly with warm water. Repeat twice per day.

Step 2

Tone your skin with lemon juice. Fill an empty spray bottle with 8 oz. of concentrated lemon juice. Spray your skin well after cleansing, and allow it to dry naturally. Repeat twice per day.

Step 3

Treat each pimple with calamine lotion. Shake a bottle of calamine lotion to mix it well. Apply calamine lotion liberally to the end of a cotton swab, and dab it onto individual acne breakouts. Let the lotion dry, and leave it on the skin for up to three hours. Rinse off the lotion with warm water. Repeat twice per day after toning the skin.

Tips and Warnings

  • Oatmeal is cleansing on the skin, can reduce redness and inflammation and is nutrient rich. When using oatmeal on the skin, it is important to use only raw, ground oats that do not contain flavorings, sweeteners or preservatives. Lemon juice is high in Vitamin C, which helps increase skin cell turnover. This means that the rate at which dead skin cells are sloughed off, and new skin cells are developed, is sped up. By speeding up turnover on the skin, the pores will remain clearer and acne-free. Calamine lotion is a mineral-based lotion that can be used on the skin to both dry up acne pustules and soothe redness and irritation. Although typically used on chicken pox blisters or a poison ivy rash, calamine lotion is also a highly effective acne treatment that can be used regularly without irritating or exacerbating acne blemishes.
