If you have sensitive skin, using a soap or a cleanser that contains harsh chemicals can cause your skin to become irritated and inflamed. In order to avoid irritating your skin or exacerbating skin sensitivities, you should use a soap or cleanser that will clean your skin without causing irritation.

Fragrance-Free, Dye-Free Soap

According to Northwestern Health Sciences University, many soaps and cleansers contain artificial fragrances and dyes, which can be irritating to sensitive skin types. Using a soap that is both fragrance-free and dye-free will clean the skin without causing it to become irritated. To apply a fragrance and dye-free soap to your skin, wet your skin well with water, then lather your hands with the soap. Spread the lather onto your skin, gently covering the entire area. Rinse off the soap thoroughly with water. A fragrance-free, dye-free soap can be used on the skin twice per day.

Castor Oil

Castor oil is a highly purgative and non-comedogenic oil that can be used on the skin as an effective and pore-flushing cleanser that will not irritate sensitive skin types. The Beauty Bottle, developers of The Oil Cleansing Method, suggest that castor oil bonds to the sebum and dirt inside the pores, which allows it to drain out of the skin more easily once heat is applied to open the pores. To apply castor oil as a cleanser for sensitive skin, spread 2 tsp. of castor oil onto your skin, and massage it in well with deep, circular finger movements. Apply a steaming hot washcloth to your skin, allowing it to remain there until it cools down completely. Once cool, use it to wipe away the castor oil and impurities. A castor oil cleanser can be sued once per day to clean the skin.

Olive Oil Castile Soap

Olive oil castile soap is a liquid soap that is created without harsh chemical additives, such as lye or sodium lauryl sulfate, which can irritate sensitive skin. Olive oil castile soap also contains olive oil, which according to the University of California is highly emollient, which can keep the skin hydrated as it cleanses. To apply an olive oil castile soap, wet your skin well with water, and pour 1 tsp. of the liquid soap into your palm. Rub your palms together to create a rich lather, and spread the lather over your skin. Rinse off your skin completely with water. Olive oil castile soap can be used on sensitive skin twice per day.
