Gray hair is caused by both aging and stress. Our hair contains trace amounts of hydrogen peroxide, and the enzymes that break down the hydrogen peroxide become less effective over time. This hinders the pigments in our hair, resulting in more grays. Poor health, stress and smoking can also cause us to lose pigmented hairs, and grays can grow in their place. Although the graying of hair is a natural and gradual process that is not fully preventable, there are steps to take that may delay the appearance of gray hair.

Step 1

Keep your hair healthy by practicing daily cleansing and moisturizing. Avoid using harsh chemicals in your hair. This will prevent some hair loss, which will in turn prevent the growth of new gray hair.

Step 2

Relieve stress by participating in activities you enjoy. Stress can cause you to lose pigmented hair.

Step 3

Follow a healthy diet rich in proteins, fruits and vegetables. Since hair is a protein, it needs vitamins and minerals to stay healthy.

Step 4

Avoid tobacco products, which may deplete the pigments in your hair.

Step 5

Talk to your doctor or hairstylist about prevention and treatment of gray hair, if you are concerned about your situation.

Tips and Warnings

  • Alternatively, you can always cover up gray hairs with hair-coloring applications.
