The prostate gland, found only in males, is located at the base of the bladder and surrounds the urethra. Common issues with the prostate include enlargement, inflammation, infection and cancer. Any time the prostate is not in optimal condition, sexual activity as well as urination can be adversely affected. Maintaining a healthy prostate often includes a healthy diet along with nutritional supplementation.

Lycopene

Lycopene is a very powerful antioxidant found in tomatoes, as many know. Many people don't know, however, that lycopene is also found in watermelon and pink grapefruit. In fact, it is the lycopene that gives these fruits their red color. A study conducted at Harvard University revealed that men who consumed tomato products at least twice weekly were 23 percent less likely to get prostate cancer in comparison to those who only consumed tomato products once in a while. This same study showed an even greater decline in risk for prostate cancer when servings were increased to ten or more weekly. Cooking the tomatoes into sauces and the like actually increases the release of lycopene so it can be more easily absorbed.

Zinc

While everyone needs this nutrient, it is especially important for men as the prostate gland holds the most zinc out of all the organs. Zinc is essential in the prevention of prostate issues since it helps to maintain proper levels of testosterone in the prostate. Taking 40 mg of zinc daily can lessen the risk of prostate cancer as well as assist during treatment. Taking the supplement form in conjunction with vitamin B6, chromium and manganese can help to ensure optimal absorption of the mineral. Food sources include eggs, poultry, soybeans and seafood.

Selenium

This trace nutrient can boost the antioxidant capacity of the body, providing greater control over cell damage. A study published in the "Journal of the National Cancer Institute" released findings that men who had high levels of selenium in the blood were about 50 percent less likely to develop advanced prostate cancer than those with lower levels. Food sources include tuna, beef, and turkey. Brazil nuts are the most selenium rich food with 544 mcg of the nutrient in just 1 oz. of dried nuts.

Saw Palmetto

Among the herbal remedies for prostate disorders, saw palmetto is the most effective and commonly used herb in Europe. It is known for its ability to reduce prostate enlargement by reducing the production of DHT and encouraging its elimination from the body. Saw palmetto can produce the same effects as the prescription Proscar within a shorter time, but it does not cause the associated PSA repression. Saw palmetto has also been shown to decrease smooth muscle contraction, thereby reducing the urgency to urinate that often accompanies prostate disorders.

Pygeum

This herb is often used in conjunction with saw palmetto as it, too, can reduce prostate enlargement through DHT reduction. Pygeum can also help reduce the urgency of urination. It is an herb rich in phytosterols, which inhibit the process where prostaglandins are biosynthesized that results in inflammation of the prostate. The herb may cause adverse effects in some individuals, but used in small amounts can offer notable results. Talk with your health care professional before using pygeum for prostate concerns.
