The NuvaRing is a very small, flexible ring that is inserted into the vagina for contraception. The hormones in the NuvaRing are the same hormones as in the birth control pill---estrogen and progestin--according to Planned Parenthood. These hormones work by inhibiting ovulation and altering cervical mucous to be unfavorable to sperm. Common side effects include menstrual irregularity, breast tenderness, vaginal irritation, weight gain and headache. There are some rare dangers associated with the NuvaRing that users should be aware of.

Blood Clots

A rare yet serous side effect of the NuvaRing is a pulmonary thrombus, which is a clot in the lung. Symptoms include severe chest pain, coughing blood and difficulty breathing. A deep vein thrombosis (DVT) is a blood clot in the leg. Symptoms of a DVT include pain or ache in the lower calf and what may feel like a hardened lump in your leg. If you are using the NuvaRing and experience any of these symptoms, seek immediate medical attention.

Liver Disease

According to the manufacturer, yellowing of the skin or whites of the eyes (jaundice), especially with fever, tiredness, loss of appetite, dark-colored urine or light-colored bowel movements may indicate a serious liver problem. Liver disease is a rare side effect of this medication.

Heart Attack

A heart attack is a rare yet serious danger while using the NuvaRing. If you experience crushing chest pain that may or may not radiate to the jaw or arm, seek immediate medical attention.

Breast Cancer

If you notice a new lump in your breast, contact your physician. There have been many studies examining the link between contraceptives and breast cancer. According to Planned Parenthood, the most recent literature suggests that the use of these hormones in birth control has little, if any, effect on the risk of developing breast cancer. You should always preform monthly self breast examination and report any abnormal findings to your doctor.

Depression

The hormones in the NuvaRing may lead to depression for some women. If you suddenly experience trouble sleeping, weakness, lack of energy, fatigue or an alteration in mood you may be exhibiting signs of severe depression. Discuss these findings with your physician.
